Walking in the Ashford area
15.12.16 Parish Paths Partnership Scheme:
Mrs Ros Davies, Liaison Officer of Devon County Council Public Rights of Way Department gave a talk on the Parish Paths Partnership (P3) scheme of which Ashford Parish Council is part. With the aid of a projector and slides, those present were advised that Ashford had been a P3 member for many years and the Public Rights of Way Department look after the Public Rights of Way including the South West Coast Path. There is 563km of unsurfaced roads, 224km of multi use route, e.g. cycle routes and two country parks. If the Rights of Way in Devon were placed end to end, they would stretch to New York. Rights of Way law is a mixture of common law and statute law and there are four types of Right of Way: Footpaths, Bridleways, Restricted Byways and Byways Open to all Traffic. These are recorded on the Definitive Map and Statement. Other items were covered such as the responsibilities of landowners, the role of Wardens, role of the P3 co-ordinator, typical Parish projects, grants made and Highway Authority powers.
